"Karnıyarık otu" is the Turkish name for psyllium, the plant Plantago ovata (blond psyllium). The product sold in Turkey as "karnıyarık otu tozu" is psyllium husk powder, known in Germany as Flohsamenschalen or Flohsamenschalenpulver. Karnıyarık otu in German and English: the correct terms
Many Turkish-speaking families in Germany know the product from Turkey but cannot find it in German shops because they search for the wrong word. The table shows which term means what.
| Turkish | German | English | What is it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| karnıyarık otu | Flohsamen, Indischer Flohsamen | psyllium, blond psyllium | The plant or the whole seeds |
| karnıyarık otu tohumu | Flohsamen (ganz) | psyllium seeds | Whole, small seeds |
| karnıyarık otu kabuğu | Flohsamenschalen | psyllium husk | Only the seed husks, which contain most of the mucilage |
| karnıyarık otu tozu | Flohsamenschalenpulver | psyllium husk powder | Finely ground husks; dissolves best |
Note: cumin (Kreuzkümmel), ribwort plantain (Spitzwegerich) and flaxseed (Leinsamen) are not the same thing. You will find more plant names in our Turkish–German herb dictionary, and the history of the plant in the thousand-year journey of psyllium.
Seeds, husks or powder: what is the difference?
Whole psyllium seeds
Whole seeds contain the husk and the kernel. They swell more slowly and less strongly than pure husks because their fibre content per gram is lower.
Psyllium husks
The husks are the part that forms the typical gel when they swell. That is why husks are what is mostly sold in Germany. They are flaky and taste almost neutral.
Psyllium husk powder
The powder consists of finely ground husks. It disperses faster in the glass, forms fewer lumps and is easy to stir into dough, smoothies or yoghurt. Because it is finer, it also swells faster, so drink it straight after stirring.
Psyllium husk compared with flaxseed and chia seeds
| Criterion | Psyllium husk | Flaxseed | Chia seeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish | karnıyarık otu kabuğu | keten tohumu | chia tohumu |
| Swelling capacity | very high | medium (higher when ground) | high |
| Fat content | practically fat-free | high, rich in alpha-linolenic acid | high |
| Taste | neutral | nutty | neutral |
| Typical amount | teaspoon | tablespoon | tablespoon |
| Kitchen use | binder, gluten-free baking | muesli, bread, quark | pudding, muesli |
If you want plant-based omega-3 fatty acids as well as fibre, psyllium pairs well with flaxseed.
How to take psyllium husk
- Measure: Start with about ½ teaspoon and increase over a few days to about 1 teaspoon (approx. 5 g). Follow the instructions on the pack.
- Stir in: Add to a large glass (200–300 ml) of water, juice or plant drink and stir well.
- Drink immediately: Do not let it stand, or it will thicken.
- Drink more: Drink another glass of water straight afterwards and enough fluid throughout the day.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends that adults eat at least 30 g of fibre a day, and many people fall short of this. Psyllium husk is an easy way to top up fibre intake as part of a varied diet. It does not replace fruit, vegetables and wholegrains.
Psyllium husk in the kitchen
- Gluten-free bread and pizza dough: 1–2 tablespoons per 500 g flour mix make the dough elastic and easy to shape.
- Low-carb baking: As a binder in doughs made with almond or coconut flour.
- Breakfast: Stir 1 teaspoon into overnight oats, yoghurt or a smoothie and add a little extra liquid.
- Sauces and soups: A small pinch thickens without adding flavour.

Safety: what you must keep in mind
- Drink enough: Without sufficient fluid, swelling fibre can cause discomfort.
- Gap to medication: Fibre can delay the absorption of medicines. A gap of at least 30–60 minutes is usual; check with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing, narrowing of the digestive tract or a bowel obstruction.
- Diabetes: Anyone taking blood-sugar-lowering medication should discuss regular use with their doctor.
- Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding: seek professional advice first.
- At first you may notice bloating, so start slowly with small amounts.
No health claims are currently authorised in the EU for psyllium husk as a food. It is a fibre-rich food, not a substitute for medical treatment.
